Images appear too large for webpage

After hundreds of hours and almost ripping my hair out, I’m desperate to get some guidance.
I’m creating sliders for my photography website and would really prefer full page images. I realize this is not achievable with the free version, but I’m reluctant to purchase the Pro version, as I’m not really happy so far with the free one.

I have resized and resized until I’m blue in the face. I have chosen the “fill” option for each image. I’ve selected the appropriate pixel size for the slider.

Currently, my images are 2048 on long side, 72 ppi at 80% quality, which gives a file size of approximately 400-500 K per image. I HAVE tried smaller. It makes no difference. I’m using vertical as well as horizontal images in each slider. Yes, I’ve selected the “automatically size options available to me.
Can someone please help me figure out how to get the entire image on the page, without having to settle for tiny images that don’t come close to filling the page? It is for a photography website, so I need to showcase my work in the best way possible.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer.
Please don’t send me links to information pages. There are no questions exactly like mine that I can find. I’m EXASPERATED!!!
Cheers,
Gina
